Free Food Wild Grapes and a Toxic look alike
First Read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menispermum_canadense aka Moonseed .. toxic .. strong laxative rank taste .. easy to identify read the link.

Yummy stuff .. http://www.eattheweeds.com/ Coming soon to a fence line or along a wooded path, up in the trees, along the river bank near you..

Bonus . Free Water http://www.blindpigandtheacorn.com/blind...ines-.html Check out the music playlist on the right side of this web site .. I'm still tappin' my foot and grinin'

Video of how to do it the hard way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqLhfF5zojo think we could get this guy a new knife for Christmas.. I would pick a thicker vine and I would check for tendrils first to make sure it is grape, but it was the only video I can find.

Just had to add this link to a poem .. http://www.blindpigandtheacorn.com/blind...tains.html I have added this blog to my favs list.. it is rich.

Yeah .. good one Shar ... there is toxic and then there is toxic .. Moonseed is the latter.. probably won't kill you but it sure is one powerful laxative.

Sorta like corn silk tea .. except corn silk tea is a diuretic .. hmm make that DIURETIC!

We have lots of muscadine vines here.. I just picked some a few days ago. It looks like we will have a lot to pick in another week or so.

Big did you see the warning not to crush muscadines with bare hands or feet.. the acid content can peel the skin ( in a bad way .. not for beauty queens)

This comes in handy http://www.amazon.com/Flexrake-LRB190-Pi...uit+picker for those places you just can't reach ... used to know a vine that climbed a dogwood tree to get to a pine tree and then tried to apply for a job with NASA .. might have to play with the tines some

I've only ate a few from the vine.. No worries.. Also, I am too lazy to crush any larger amount say for jelly or wine by hand.. lol The muscadines here are usually singles or very small bunches of 5 - 8..
I'm gonna visit the muscadine vines later this week to see if more have ripened. I have a few waaay up in trees, Thinking about just pulling them down since they are so prolific here..

Pruning the vines will help the fruit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdcaKO4Lk10 some good Q&A in the comments .. might consider "taming the wild muscadine" to get better fruit and making them easier to harvest.

Once you get them under control ( as if anybody ever really gets a muscadine under control ) you have free food, very little climate or pest issues.. dude, like organic!

RE: Free Food Wild Grapes and a Toxic look alike
Totally!

I did plant 2 varieties of "domestic" grapes on an existing trellis this spring. Planted six and 5 lived. One was really taking off until we had our 28 days of rain then i guess the roots were drowning and the leaves on them turned brown. I was very disappointed but it appears they are all making a comeback now. I see new leaves on them. I am tempted to attempt transplanting a few muscadine vines from the woods out back but then again they seem to grow really well where they are so I might just prune them and let them keep their home as is.. There are literally hundreds of plants out there...
